ISFT - Intiformer Story of Finding and Teaming up

About ISFT: ISFT is a story that I've had the idea for since I was in fifth grade. (I'm going into tenth grade this year.) I started writing it near the end of fifth grade, and I posted two chapters of it on Quizilla, but I lost the document I'd saved the story onto when I switched from a Windows '98 to a Windows 2000.
Three years later, when I'd just passed eighth grade, I remembered the password to my Quizilla account and logged onto it, only to find that same story's two chapters posted on there. As a writer, I have to be honest: I wrote terribly back in fifth grade. Since fifth grade, my grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and overall literary skills have improved drastically, and I was immediately able to recognize these visible improvements when I read those crappy two chapters on Quizilla. I thought, "Wow, this story doesn't deserve to be this bad," and so I decided to rewrite it, or at least the first two chapters.
The original length of one of those chapters was about two pages in Microsoft Word in Times New Roman font, size 16. When I rewrote the first chapter in Times New Roman 12, it was approximately twelve pages in length. The second chapter was barely eight pages, but that's because I switched narrators: the narrator of the first chapter (May) was much more talkative and descriptive than the narrator of the second chapter (Flannery). That, right there, says at least one thing about me as a writer: my characters are all different, some in few ways but some in many ways, with some being wordy and some being quiet. In that sense, I guess I'm a good writer--in that sense.
About the Narrators: Originally, ISFT had three narrators: May, Flannery, and Aurora. In this newer, better, revised version, ISFT has five narrators: May, Flannery, Aurora, Ann, and Jennifer. Also, in this revised version, each chapter consists of two or three parts, depending on who the narrator of the chapter is. If May, Aurora, or Ann is narrating the chapter, then the chapter will have three parts, with Ann's chapters being the longest of the three and Aurora's the shortest. If Flannery or Jennifer is the narrator, then the chapter will be comprised of two parts, with Flannery narrating the longer chapters and Jennifer narrating the shorter ones.
May's chapters are all approximately twelve pages in length, with one part being about four pages long. Flannery's chapters are usually about eight pages long, with one part being about four pages long. Aurora's chapters are around ten pages in length, with one part being three to four pages long. Ann's chapters are the longest out of the five narrators, spanning approximately fourteen pages and with each part being nearly five pages long. Jennifer's chapters, on the other hand, are the shortest of the five, with each chapter being about six pages long and each part consisting of approximately three pages. Basically, the order of chapter length for each narrator is--from longest to shortest--as follows: Ann, May, Aurora, Flannery, Jennifer.

About May: Summary: May is one of the main characters in the story. She narrates chapters 1, 4, 8, 12, 16, and the epilogue. She is the first person to obtain her intiformer powers. She is an otaku and uses common Japanese words in her everyday speech. She is obsessed with the all-girls J-Pop band KOTOKO; she runs a fansite for them and listens to their music daily.
Full Name: May Amorous Anderson. Birthdate: May 7th, 1995. Hair: Blonde, medium-straight, shoulder-length. Eyes: Light-blue. Skin: Light Fair (almost pale). Color: Blue (all shades). Interests: Technology (computers, cell phones); music (mainly foreign). Hobbies: Singing, writing stories and poetry, golfing. TV: The Weather Channel. Family: Alyssa (older sister), Cecile (mother), Mitchell (father). Friends: Rebecca (internet friend), Joey (boyfriend), Neil (good friend). Traits: Sweet, social, spirited, intelligent, protective.

About Flannery: Summary: Flannery is one of the main characters in the story. She narrates chapters 2, 5, 10, 13, 17, and 22. She is the second person to obtain her intiformer powers. She's basically 'gothic' for about half of the duration of the series because of her clothes and her attitude. She often sleeps during classes and even skips them sometimes. She is a tomboy and participates in sports.
Full Name: Flannery Ildri Faeroe. Birthdate: August 15th, 1994. Hair: Cherry-red, medium-straight, elbow-length. Eyes: Dark-brown. Skin: Dark Fair (almost tan). Color: Red (all shades). About Aurora: Summary: Aurora is one of the main characters in the story. She narrates chapters 3, 6, 11, 18, and 21. She is the third person to obtain her intiformer powers. She's very academic, but she's even more environmental, as shown when she skips a day of school and goes to a 'save-the-rainforest' riot instead. She's won the Honor Student Award every year, and she's one of the two Secretaries in the Student Council.
Full Name: Aurora Aurum Allen. Birthdate: December 22nd, 1994. Hair: Celadon-green (dyed), light-curly (almost straight), waist-length. Light-green. Skin: Light Fair (almost pale). About Catharine: Summary: Catharine is rather obsessed with frogs; she often goes to the local lake to catch frogs and even brings some of them home, though Tivona insists that they cannot stay in the house and she is forced to take them back to the lake, much to her disdain. Like Aurora, she's won the Honor Student Award every year.

About Chris: Summary: At the start of the series, he's been hospitalized due to the flash fire (the one that gave Flannery her powers), but he's fully recovered by the start of chapter 8. He seems to have no interest in dating and considers Aurora to be "a good friend".

About Joey: Summary: Joey first appears in the first chapter when May is in the hospital. He is actually rather perceptive. He seems to dislike Neil.

About Neil: Summary: Neil serves as something of a trust source for both May and Aurora throughout the first half of the series, consistently giving them advice about things that they later discover are very important to them. He seems to dislike Joey, but gets along well with Noah.

About Misa: Summary: Misa is the second intiformer spirit to make her appearance. She is more talkative than Flannery is, and she annoys Flannery at first with her intelligence and insightfulness; Flannery gets used to all of this after a while.
Nickname: Misa (Flannery and other intiformers). Symbols: Fire, [to be discovered]. Human: Flannery. Traits: Talkative, intelligent, spirited, athletic, antisocial.

About Natura: Summary: Natura is the third intiformer spirit to make her appearance. She is, surprisingly, twice as intelligent as Aurora is, and she is the only one whom Aurora goes to when she has troubles with schoolwork, much to Natura's dismay. Along with being very intelligent, she's very environmental as well; these two traits enable Aurora to get along perfectly with Natura.
Nickname: Natura (Aurora and other intiformers). Symbols: Earth, [to be discovered]. Human: Aurora. Traits: Intelligent, peaceful, cheerful, caring, environmental.

“I'll be back in an hour, oneesan, okaasan, otousan!” I call to my family, whose unified response is a slightly strained “sayonara”. After all, it's raining outside right now, and thunder and lightning are forecast for our area within the next hour. But I don't think that matters to me, because I'm still going to at least see if I'm having my golf lessons today.

I shift my golf bag onto my back and exit my house through the obvious front door. I run as fast as I can—which is surprisingly fast for my age; I can run up to 12.5 miles an hour—down the path that leads into the golf course, ignoring the cold raindrops that splash down onto my shoulder-length, ponytailed blonde hair.

"Mitsumenaide, tsukamaenaide... Mayoikonda, batafurai...”

I stop myself from running any further upon hearing those a cappella lyrics; they're the first two lines in the first chorus of the song Meikyuu Butterfly—which is from one of my favorite animes, Shugo Chara!—, so I'm familiar enough with the anime to recognize the lyrics. I look around me in every direction, but the only people I see are a short girl with light-brown hair who looks no older than 13 and a dark-haired boy who is standing in front of a miniature garden. I recognize the dark-haired boy as being from my school—in two of my classes, in fact—, but I don't say anything to him because I can't seem to remember his name. (Even though the second semester just started last week—today is January 13th—, I still don't know the names of everyone in all of my classes. Yeah, I know it's really pathetic and all, but I've never been very good at remembering names.)

“Jiyuu utau dare ni mo mienai hane. Kakushiteru no anata no mune no oku.”

Who is singing these lyrics right now?! The song sounds femininely mature and softly spirited when sang correctly, yet I still only see the same two people. There's no possible way that one of them could be singing, because not only do I not see either of their mouths moving, but their physical descriptions don't fit in with the song.

“May, who are you looking for?” I turn around upon hearing my name and see my classmate looking at me in a rather confused way. I smile a little but can't say anything in reply to his question, as I still can't seem to remember his name and I'm the kind of person who feels awkward talking to a person who she doesn't really know.

I shake my head apologetically, even though I have no idea what I'd be apologizing for, but he just smiles at me in an understanding way and tells me, “My name is Neil, Neil Montgomery. I have Advanced Language Arts and Honor Choir with you.”

Wow. I can't believe I never paid attention to someone who's not only in more than one of my classes, but he's in my two best classes as well. “I-I'm sorry for not recognizing you! I just have a poor memory and all, and the school is so big and full of people, so...”

“It's fine,” he says to me in a pleasant tone, as if he had expected to hear something similar to what I just said. “I seem to blend in rather well with my surroundings, anyways. You probably wouldn't have ever even noticed me if I didn't live so close to you.”

As much as I want to disagree with him, I know that he's right. I'm the kind of person who'll sit next to a person in school all year long and never say a word to him/her, but on the last few days of school, I'll poke them on the shoulder and say, 'Thanks for a great year! Will you sign my yearbook?'

“If I recall,” Neil continues, his talkativeness surprising me a little, “you take golf lessons every Sunday afternoon from 16:00 to 17:00. It's currently 15:54, and it would take approximately five minutes for you, a 12-year-old girl with above-average athletic capabilities, to reach the community center, which is where your weekly lessons are held.”

How the heck does he know all of this about me? What is he, my stalker?

“Why are you simply standing here in front of me when you should be walking towards the center right now? I can't say that you know for sure that your lessons will be canceled because of the rain, since you're outside right now and were supposedly heading towards the center before stopping to look for I-don't-know-you, but even if you just now got the idea of your lessons being canceled, you would've gone home already instead of—”

“I'd like it if you'd be quiet right now, because I'm trying to think about something.” I'm not really trying to think about anything; I just don't feel like listening to a statistical stalker like him. But I just now thought of a question for him. “Um, did you hear someone singing just now?”

He gives me a confused look. “What are you talking about?” he asks, frowning a little. “I can't hear anyone singing, and besides, there's nobody outside right now because it's raining so hard.”

“Then why are you outside?”

“No reason,” he replies, smiling at me sweetly. His sweet smile and politeness make me want to actually try being his friend, even though he's a guy and I don't usually get along too well with guys. “Actually, there is a reason, but it's not something that I'd feel like telling someone who I don't really know.”

“What do you mean?” I ask, trying to sound curious but not really all that interested. “You know so much about me, so how can you say that I'm 'someone who [you] don't really know'?”

“I'm in the Student Council,” he explains. “It's part of my responsibility to know a good deal of information about all of the students, especially the ones that are in my class.” Oh, so he's in the Student Council...I guess this means he's not a stalker, then. I let out a sigh of relief; I didn't want to have someone stalking me when I barely knew them. As if having just read my mind, he asks me, “What, did you think I was a stalker or something?” He then laughs as if he's just told a joke that he knew wasn't funny. “That's not the kind of guy I am. I wouldn't stalk a girl just because I like her.”

I blink in confusion. Is he trying to tell me that he likes me? “Wait, do you mean that you actually like me, Neil?”

He laughs the same laugh again and tells me, “I don't like you, but I can tell you that I do like someone in one of our classes, in case you're interested in knowing about my love life.” He winks at me knowingly, implying that he knows something I don't, which would probably be true anyways, with all the things he seems to know about me.

“Are you trying to tell me something again?” I ask him in a slightly irritated voice. He senses my irritation and shakes his head. “Then why are you telling me these things?”

“I get the feeling that something's going to happen to you,” he says in a calm and quiet voice. It surprises me because he'd been playing around less than a minute ago, but now he sounds so...serious.

Tilting my head to the side a little, my voice becomes concerned as I ask him, “Like what? Is it something bad or something good?”

He frowns a little but says nothing. Suddenly, the front door to his house opens a little, and a tall man who appears to be in his early forties' reveals himself. His dark-brown hair is the same shade as Neil's, and even though it's about twice the length of my shoulder-length hair, it doesn't look very out-of-place; in fact, it adds to his mysteriousness and makes him seem almost dangerous. He reminds me of an adult form of Hao from Shaman King.

“Neil, the rain is becoming heavier,” he says to my classmate. His voice sounds calm and controlled, but it has some sort of parental tone to it. “You should come inside soon.” He glances at me, acknowledging my presence, then closes the door again.

“My father's not very verbal,” Neil tells me, looking up at the clouded sky. “He doesn't like music very much, but he still comes to every one of my performances, just to be there for me. He's a surprisingly calm person for someone whose wife died rather recently... and now that I think about, the rest of my family and I are indifferent as well. I wonder why that is.”

His face saddens a little, and I have the sudden urge to know more about him, but I realize that he still hasn't answered my question from before. “Um, I want to try cheering you up, but... you still haven't answered my—”

“I think it's something bad, but I could be wrong,” he interrupts, surprising me a little, though making me feel a little nervous because of his answer. “I'm sorry, May. I didn't mean to make you feel worried about an event that probably won't even happen.” His expression remains sad, but an apologetic smile makes its way across his face. His eyes suddenly flicker as if he'd forgotten about something, and he glances down at his wristwatch while saying to me, “It's 15:59. Shouldn't you be heading towards the center right now?”

I gasp in realization of the time; I hadn't even expected to stop on the way over there, and now I'll end up being late even if I ran as fast as I can. I nod thankfully at Neil and run towards the center with all of my strength, hoping to at least get the chance to see if I'd be having golf today. Although, to hear the stormy combination of thunder and lightning strike in the distance gives me the feeling that my lessons aren't what I should really be worrying about right now.
